Planting Horseradish Root

Planting Horseradish Root

In this article I will go over basic planting horseradish root.  I’ll tell you where to obtain horseradish root, when and where to plant, and basic care for your root.

How to Obtain Horseradish Roots:

Horseradish Root

Horseradish is not started from seed but rather a root. You can get roots from Amazon, a friend or I have even started a plant direct from the grocery store. I just purchased an organic root with the buds on it.

Where to Plant Horseradish

Horseradish is considered a perennial, as long as it has a cold snap below 40 degrees, it will come back each after year. Knowing this, it is best to plant it in a flower garden, large, deep pot or herb garden and not in your vegetable garden.

The plant requires partial sun to full sun but will grow at a slower rate in partial shade. I have had great success with poorer soil. Just give the plant at least 18 inches to spread and pair with plants that grow 24 inches tall.

When to Plant

If you live in an area that receives a hard frost or snow you should plant your root in late fall before the frost makes the ground impossible to dig.

If this time has past, or if you live in an area where you do not get frost or snow, store the root in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.

As soon as the frost leaves the ground in early spring plant the root.

How to Plant

Dig a hole twice as deep in depth and length as the root. You will notice bud nodes for the leaves.

This portion will be just above your soil after you have buried your root. Water it well. Keep moist until established.

Care

Once established and growing leaves you don’t have to water the plants. They will do well with very little care. If you pick a few tender leaves they add a wonderful spice to your garden green salads.

If you see that the plant is flowering, it will not harm your root and you do not have you remove the flowers like some other plants.

Now Wait.  Digger Up and Use It

Now, comes the most difficult of tasks, waiting. Wait until you can dig up and harvest some of your roots. That is my favorite part!! Even though, I have to wear fancy eyewear 🙂
