Acceptance and Toleration
This week the kids are off school for spring break. Instead of the traditional Spring Break vacation, my husband and I decided we were going to give the children experience days over the course of the week. Adding a little more culture into the children’s lives. Diversifying the teen’s acceptance and toleration to spend an entire week with their parents.
The Start of Our Offical Vacation
Last Saturday was the start of our official vacation. We attended a maple syrup seminar, took a walk downtown Appleton, WI and visited a store that has always caught my daughter’s eye called Angels Forever. Then we turned our attention to the characters across the street at The Paper Valley Hotel. The Paper Valley was having its annual Anime convention.
What is an Anime Convention?
I had never witnessed an Anime convention before and it was very interesting. Anime is a Japanese animated production which includes animated television series, short films and full-length feature films characters.
Groups of people get together at these conventions and wear and act the part of their fantasy Japanese Anime character. They wear handmade costumes in fantastic themes based on their character.
I stopped a group of college gals and asked them what character they were dressed as and why they chose to dress up. The told me they were characters from the longest running online Japanese comic strip and enjoyed the weekend so far. Good, clean, fun and entertainment.
Does This Practice Seem Strange To You?
To other people, it may seem strange that adults run around for a weekend dressed up as pretend characters. Yep, I heard a few comments from people outside the convention.
Truthfully, it isn’t strange to the people attending. Heck, a show of hands who hasn’t dressed up in character on Halloween?
Which led me to today’s posting. Acceptance. We coexist with millions of people in this world. As a general blanket statement, many people can not accept or tolerate things different from their own beliefs. Many of the non-acceptant people can not outwardly express themselves in a healthy way when their beliefs are tested.
The term acceptance has three different meanings:
1.) The first is known as the act of taking or receiving something offered. For example, if someone is giving you a gift and you receive it, then you have accepted the gift; therefore, having acceptance.
2.) Another definition of acceptance has to deal with a positive welcome; favor and endorsement. In which, a person could like someone and, have acceptance for them due to their approval of that person.
3.) The third description of acceptance is that it can be an act of believing or assenting.
The definition overlaps with the definition of the quality known as toleration. Acceptance and tolerance are not synonyms.
“This is it” response to anything occurring in any moment of life. A strong disagreement to differences of opinion or behavior.
Acceptance and Toleration
Something as simple as walking into an Anime convention has taught me I that I need to stop being so judgemental of myself.
I accept other people for who they are. Regardless, of how they look or act. I am patient with others, I give them a chance to tell me their stories without judgment. So, why can’t I do the same for myself?
Just food for thought for today. Each morning is a new day, go out and live it to the fullest for today is all we are promised. Be kind to yourself and others 🙂
