For a good portion of my childhood I was addicted to Tootsie Rolls. Maybe it was because my grandfather always had a pocket full when working outside?
So, when I stumbled upon a recipe in my great grandmother’s cookbook I had to give it a whirl.
Sure enough! The recipe is pretty close. The only difference between store bought and homemade is, that homemade Tootsie Rolls, are softer.
After making them at home I believe we get stale Tootsie Rolls in the store 😉
1/2 cup white corn syrup
2 Tablespoons softened butter
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 splash of orange extract
3/4 cup Milk Powder
3 cups powdered sugar
1.) In a large bowl; mix together corn syrup, butter and cocoa powder.
2.) Add in Milk Powder, extracts and powdered sugar. Mix and the knead together. It will seem rather dry at first but just keep kneading it together.
3.) Shape into individual rolls and wrap in waxed paper.
One extremely important note about this recipe. The recipe uses Milk Powder, not instant milk (there is a difference and I learned this lesson a little late.)
