I took a ride up to Door County, Wisconsin a few weeks back to take in the sights of the Door County cherry blossoms blooming. We liked the fact the peninsula was a little less of a hustle and bustle during the spring. It gives you a chance to spend some peaceful moments with the surroundings before the busy summer crowd invades the peninsula.
Door County Cherry Blossoms
Even though the weather was not extremely warm there was plenty of fun to be had bumming around the shops that were open for the season. It was like having your own private getaway.
When we go back up for our next visit to pick cherries, the area will be exhausted with people. Certainly, a little different from our first trip.
However, Door County is a place you have to experience at least once during your lifetime.
We try to tour the area three times a year. Spring, summer and fall. The towns and villages that make up the county are wonderful!
Fields of Cherry Blossoms
Spring in Door County, Wisconsin is a treat for your senses. Field and fields of Cherry blossoms grace the Door County Peninsula. Rows and rows of blossoms, soon to be rows and rows of cherries.
When Do the Cherry Trees Blossom in Door County?
The blossoms all depend on the weather. Usually blooming mid- to late-May. The blossoms only have the snow white look to them for the first four days. After that, they start to fade to brown at different intervals. They also get beat up from the wind in most cases.
Rows and rows of Door County cherry blossoms, soon to be rows and rows of cherries. The blossoms bring out groups of tourists to see the sites and enjoy everything the peninsula has to offer.
U Pick or They Pick Each Has a Benefit
When the cherries ripen (Around the 4th of July) and are ready for the pick’n you have two choices. Pick your own or already picked. Our family is in the pick your own category. There is something about carting the cherry ladders from tree to tree and sporting the cherry bucket belts around your waist that is appealing to us.
Plus, who doesn’t like to see who can pick the quickest or which person in your group makes the beast heap on top of their pail. Wonderful family memories right there.
You can pick your own cherries in the orchards or you can purchase them pre-picked. Below are the approximate times:
Sweet Cherries – Early to Late July
Tart Cherries – Mid July to Mid August
Always call ahead before making the trip. The cherries go fast.
