SS Arthur M Anderson
Pictured is the SS Arthur M Anderson, it is a Great Lakes cargo ship that has much of its service work done in my home town of Sturgeon Bay, WI. If you are a history buff you might remember this cargo ships name.
The Ship is Famous For:
The cargo ship is famous for being the last ship to be in contact with the SS Edmund Fitzgerald before it sank in a Lake Superior storm on November 10, 1975.
Arthur M Anderson was also the first rescue ship on the scene in a vain search for Edmund Fitzgerald survivors (there were none). 29 lives were lost.
Ships Docked in Sturgeon Bay
Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin is where plenty of Great Lakes freighters are laid up for repairs during the winter.
The massive ships carry bulk cargoes of materials such as limestone, iron ore, grain, coal or salt from the mines and fields to the populous industrial areas down the lakes.
Cason Calloway Freighter
The freighter is docked along Bayship Building in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
To get an idea just how massive these freighters are. check out the people standing on the dock, just off the bow in the picture below.
Location To Get a Closer Look
To get a closer look at the ships there is a spot on the old train bridge where you can walk out and sit along the bay. The easiest way to get to this location is to locate Sonny’s Pizza at 129 N Madison Ave, just before the steel bridge.
Park in the museum parking lot across the street from Sonny’s and then walk to Sonny’s. To the left of Sonny’s pizza is a walking path that leads out to the old train bridge.
When Returning To Your Car
When you walk back to your car be sure to walk along the water in front of the museum too. You can get views of both 1929 steel bridge, tugboats and Fred A Busse Chicago Fireboat.
