Explosion Of Color Rib Mountain

An explosion of color Rib Mountain in Wausau, Wisconsin. Rib Mountain is home to the Rib Mountain State Park and the Granite Peak Ski Area. I’m standing looking over the Granite Peak Ski Resort in the Town of Rib Mountain. Which is in Marathon County, Wisconsin just south of Wausau.

The Feeling You Feel Standing There

Standing on top of Rib Mountain makes you feel like you are on top of the world. Walking down to the ski lift chairs, looking out directly down, off the rocky cliff makes your heart pump with excitement. Or, fear. Not sure which one I felt. It was a mix of feelings and adrenaline.

Granite Peak opened on the slopes of Rib Mountain in 1937, it was one of the first ski areas in North America. Stowe in Vermont had opened a few years earlier in 1934. Before that, Sun Valley in Idaho had become the nation’s first ski resort in the western states in 1936.

Local Legend

Local legend states that the “ribs” in Rib Mountain denote that it is the burial site of Paul Bunyan. The nearby Mosinee Hill is said to be the grave of Babe the Blue Ox.
