Grassy Island Lighthouse Range Green Bay

The Grassy Island Range Lights in Green Bay, Wisconsin are a scenic shoreline stop where you can watch freighters, enjoy soft sunset light over the water, and sometimes spot bald eagles in winter. Although the lighthouse grounds themselves are closed to the public, the nearby shoreline and Metro boat launch make this an easy place to stop and take in the view.

This is one of those quieter Green Bay spots that feels different depending on the season. Some days it is all about pastel skies and reflections on the water. Other days it is the movement of ships or the chance of seeing eagles gathered over open water in winter.

About the Lighthouse

The Grassy Island range lights were originally located farther north of Green Bay. In 1998, the two lighthouse towers were relocated to a breakwater near the Green Bay Yacht Club and Coast Guard area, where they later went through a lengthy restoration process.

They were rededicated in 2005 and remain one of the more interesting maritime features along this stretch of shoreline. Although visitors cannot walk onto the lighthouse grounds, the nearby public access still gives you a good view of the towers.

This is a simple stop, but one with a lot of character if you enjoy lighthouses, Great Lakes navigation history, and shoreline views.

Ships at Sunset

This is also a nice place to catch views of the Leo Frigo Bridge and, if your timing is right, large freighters moving in or out of the Fox River. When one comes through at sunset, it adds a lot to the scene.

It does not happen every evening, of course. Ships come through when there is cargo traffic, so this is more of a lucky-timing kind of stop than something guaranteed. But when it happens, the size of the freighters feels impressive from so close to shore.

If you enjoy photography, this location is especially pretty in soft evening light when the sky reflects off the water and the range lights begin to glow.

Eagles in Winter

Some winters, when much of the bay and river have frozen over, small pockets of open water remain farther offshore where the Fox River opens into the Bay of Green Bay. Those areas can attract bald eagles looking for fish.

One winter day a few years ago, I counted 34 eagles in that fishing area. Some were actively fishing, while others were hovering nearby hoping to steal a catch from another eagle.

If you go out in winter, bring binoculars, dress warmly, and be patient. It is not always guaranteed, but it is definitely a spot worth checking when conditions are right.

The Grassy Island Range Lights are not a place for a long hike or a big afternoon outing. Instead, this is a quieter shoreline stop where the appeal comes from timing, atmosphere, and what you might happen to see.

On one visit it may be all about sunset colors and reflections. On another it may be ships, winter birds, or eagles out over the water. That is part of what makes this Green Bay location interesting to return to in different seasons.

If you enjoy lighthouses, Great Lakes history, birds, or simple waterfront views, this is a nice place to keep on your list.
