A Weekend Stop in Manistique
We planned a quick weekend route through the Manistique and Escanaba area before heading home for Easter brunch with family. After arriving in Manistique, we spent time exploring the town together and found that it offers a nice mix of waterfront scenery, quirky roadside stops, and small-town Upper Michigan character.
What I liked most was how easy it was to move from one simple stop to the next without feeling rushed. Manistique is the kind of place where a few small moments can add up to a really enjoyable visit.
Paul Bunyan Statue
One of our first roadside stops was the wooden Paul Bunyan statue. It is the kind of fun, unexpected stop that fits a Great Lakes road trip perfectly. Even if you only spend a few minutes there, it adds a little personality to the day.
Manistique has long embraced the Paul Bunyan connection, and whether you think of him as legend, folklore, or roadside Americana, he makes for a memorable stop when passing through town.
Manistique Boardwalk and Shoreline
From there, we drove downtown and then over to the waterfront near the boardwalk and beach area. This stretch of shoreline gives you a nice place to walk, look out over Lake Michigan, and view the Manistique East Breakwater Lighthouse from a distance.
When we visited, the pier was too icy to safely try getting closer to the lighthouse, so we admired it from shore instead. Even from a distance, it was a beautiful scene.
The weather changed constantly while we were there. What started as bright blue sky shifted into storm clouds, drizzle, flurries, and then finally broke open into a rainbow and dramatic evening color. It made the whole shoreline feel even more interesting to photograph.

Overnight Stay Near the Boardwalk
We stayed overnight across from the boardwalk area, which made it easy to head back out in the morning without needing to drive anywhere first. That is one thing I really liked about this stop โ once you are near the water, it is easy to keep exploring at a relaxed pace.
Morning Walk Along Lake Michigan
The next morning I walked the Manistique Boardwalk and nearby shoreline looking for agates and beach glass. I did not find agates that morning, but I did find a few pieces of beach glass, which made the walk worthwhile.
The shoreline had that early spring mix of cold wind, leftover snow, open water, and rocky beach. It felt like winter and spring were both still trying to claim the same day.

Why Manistique Is Worth a Stop
Manistique may not always be the first Upper Peninsula town people think of, but it has a lot going for it if you enjoy a slower kind of travel. The boardwalk, shoreline, lighthouse, beachcombing, and small-town stops make it easy to spend a relaxing afternoon and morning here.
