From this serene vantage point, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the steadfast Ship Canal Light and North Pierhead Light, their silhouettes standing tall against the shimmering waters, evoking tales of maritime adventure and quiet heroism. These are two of the 3 lighthouses in Sturgeon Bay, and of the 11 highly Instagramable lighthouses of Door County.
As you stroll, keep an eye out for nature’s delightful cast: songbirds trilling from the grasses, elegant waterbirds gliding over the shallows, and the occasional fox or deer peeking from the dunes, reminding us of the wild beauty that thrives here. It’s a moment of pure connection, where the lake’s rhythm soothes the soul—just as it did for me on my last visit, when I paused to watch a fox dart playfully through the sands. Safety note: Stick to designated paths to protect the fragile dunes and wildlife, and be cautious near the water’s edge due to potential currents.

If you would like a closer look at Ship Canal Light and North Pierhead Light, they are located at the entrance of the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal.

Park in the lot in front of the large white lighthouse (Coast Guard Station) and walk down to the lake on the pier.
The lighthouse is accessible from the adjacent pier. Visitors can enjoy scenic views of the canal and the lighthouse while walking along the pier.
However, access to the lighthouse itself is restricted.

Walk Along The Dock And See History
The John Purves Tugboat
John Purves tugboat is docked along the water, It is a 149-foot, large red tugboat, that was built in 1919.
The tug has sailed everywhere from the Bering Sea to the Caribbean and the Great Lakes.
You can take a 45-minute tour of the tug by paying a fee at the Door County Maritime Museum.
