Hostas are extremely easy to grow and add visual appeal to flower beds.  They are hardy plants that look wonderful in any season.  There is one garden pest that feels the same appeal toward hostas as we do.  The slug.  Here are some ideas for slug prevention of hostas.

Identifying a Slug Problem

Identifying a slug issue is pretty straightforward.  

Your beautiful green leaves have holes everywhere. If you leave the plants to the slugs, they start to look like Swiss cheese.



What a Slug Looks Like

There are variations in the size and colors of slugs.

They are very destructive to plants and fruit they lay their eggs with great care in the earth, and the young ones are hatched, the slugs without shells and the snails with shells completely formed. They are most troublesome in spring and autumn.


Non-Chemical Way to Stop Them in Their Tracks

This product is excellent if you have raised beds and flower pots. You can wrap the tape around anything. It is non-toxic and no chemicals.

Slugs and snails do not like to cross the tape because it gives off a sensation that they do not like when their slime secretions come in contact with the tape. Making them turn the other way.

Home Remedy for Slug Prevention of Hostas

Anytime I can make something at home versus purchasing it in the store to save a few bucks, I do.

It doesn’t matter if it is in the garden like Hummingbird Nectar, Suet Filled Egg Shells, Butterfly NectarPlant Food, or Bird Seed Ornaments.

So, it shouldn’t be all that surprising that I have a cheap and easy solution to rid your flower beds of slugs recipe.  Right?


Mix one part non-sudsing ammonia with two parts of water.

Recipe:

Mix one part non sudsing ammonia with two parts of water.

Place the solution in a spray bottle and spray the leaves of the plant at least once a week.  That’s it. Simple!
