The first weekend of the new year brought the perfect excuse to get outside and explore the Lake Michigan shoreline. Winter along the Great Lakes can transform familiar places into dramatic frozen landscapes, and the waterfront in Menominee, Michigan was no exception.
With waves frozen into layers of ice and the Menominee North Pier Lighthouse standing at the end of the pier, the scene felt quiet, cold, and beautifully wintery — one of those moments that makes a simple road trip worthwhile.

A Winter Road Trip to Menominee
The start of a new year always feels like the right time to slow down and spend time outdoors. For many people, that means taking a short road trip and exploring places that look completely different in winter.
A message from a friend about the frozen shoreline near the lighthouse was all the encouragement needed to make the drive to Menominee and see the icy landscape firsthand.
Lunch Stop in Menominee
Before heading to the shoreline, we stopped for lunch at the Ogden Club on 10th Street in Menominee. The cozy restaurant was the perfect place to warm up before heading back outside into the cold.
The restaurant is known for its creative menu and its build-your-own Bloody Mary bar, complete with toppings like pickled vegetables, cheese, bacon, and house-made mixes.
While there, we also discovered a rustic bar game called Hammersloggin, played with a hammer, nails, and a slab of tree trunk.
Exploring the Frozen Shoreline
After lunch we headed down to the waterfront. The shoreline near the lighthouse had turned into a frozen landscape where waves, wind, and freezing temperatures had coated nearly everything in thick layers of ice.
Walking along the lakeshore required slow, careful steps as the ice formed unusual shapes around rocks, railings, and shoreline structures.
Every direction revealed new frozen details. Waves appeared frozen mid-motion while the rocks along the shoreline were encased in thick layers of ice.
About the Menominee Lighthouse
The Menominee North Pier Lighthouse stands at the end of the harbor pier where the Menominee River meets Lake Michigan. The lighthouse helps guide vessels safely into the harbor between Menominee, Michigan and Marinette, Wisconsin.
While the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, the pier and surrounding shoreline provide excellent views and photography opportunities throughout the year.
A Quiet Winter Afternoon
Spending the afternoon walking the frozen shoreline and photographing the ice formations turned out to be the perfect way to begin the year.
Winter along the Great Lakes has a way of transforming familiar places into something entirely different, and the Menominee waterfront offered one of those peaceful winter landscapes that makes a cold day outdoors worthwhile.
Sometimes the simplest road trips become the most memorable ones.
